(Set in the late 80s/early 90s)

For the Young hearts  out there, in their late 40s and 50s

The history class today was literally going back to the age of Mughals and it refused to end and come back to the present modern times. Zakir Sir, was in full swing talking about art and architecture brought in by the Turks – Pietra Deura , as seen in Taj Mahal, he emphasised . Nanki raised her hand and stood up to say – Sir , this can also be seen in the Golden Temple in Amritsar too . Yes , thanks to Maharaja Ranjit Singh said Zakir Sir and continued .

Having made a good interjection, Nanki now decided to focus her thoughts on something more interesting – the juicy Veg Burger of Nirulas and the 3:30 pm movie at Chanakya which she and her new friend Sakshi Ahuja had planned for the afternoon.  And later she was going to stay the weekend with Sakshi to do some joint study.  Sakshi was regretting taking Medieval India as specialisation in post-graduation while Nanki was thoroughly enjoying it . So the latter had agreed to help Sakshi in making notes.  After the movie, Sakshi’s elder brother , Varun who was studying final year Law , would pick them up from Chanakya on his way back.

Nirula’s was one of the most buzzing place for youngsters those days. Nanki and Sakshi relished their burgers , hash brown potatoes and polished it all off with 2 huge scoops each of ‘21 Love ice cream’. The movie Ek Duje ke Liye was at once both entertaining and sad but the songs were melodious.

By the time Varun came to pick them, they were tired. Sakshi introduced her friend Nanki to her brother. Nanki shyly said hello and climbed into the back of the car while Sakshi sat in front with her brother. She liked Varun instantly as he had a very pleasant face, was smiling from time to time and very courteous. She had heard that he was very good at studies and was going to join their extended families’ law firm next year after Post Graduation.

She herself was interested in studying criminology at Tata Institute in Mumbai but her parents wanted her to get married and then pursue any further studies. Sitting at the back she wondered if she should address Varun as Bhaiya (brother) as would have been normal practice those days to address a friends brother. Dekhenge (will see) ! She said to herself and made herself comfortable. Little did she know that the weekend at her friends place would bring in turbulence to her otherwise smooth life.

The drive from Chanakya cinema to Punjabi Bagh – Sakhsi’s house was long and Nanki had to be woken up  when destination was reached . Sakshi’s parents had a big bunglow with big airy rooms and one bedroom  for each of the 3 children. Rajinder Ahuja (fondly addressed as Papaji) and Sukhwinder Ahuja (fondly addressed as Mummyji), Sakshi’s parents were warm and welcoming. Her eldest brother Tarun was in the family business and that day was resting with a headache.

Rachna, Nanki’s mother was reluctant to send her daughter to the Ahuja house as she knew that there were two young boys in the house but Sukhwinder Ahuja had herself spoken to the former and assured her that Nanki will be treated as a child of the house .

As it was a weekend Nanki had a luxurious head bath before dinner. Her open waistlength tresses made her look even younger. I envy your long hair Nanki , said Sakshi but isn’t it limiting not to have any more style except a braided plait ? We Sikhs think of our hair as a blessing from God, so we do not judge it. Nanki’s mother had insisted that as a night dress she should take a proper long Kaftan . With the three men in the house she should always be properly attired. You look like a mermaid with the sea green kaftan and long flowing hair. You just need some fins, Sakshi teased. Nanki was a little nervous about the dinner with the whole family.

Papaji was a very entertaining host and he brought Nanki into every conversation. Varun sat diagonally opposite and stared at her every now and then. She felt that his eyes were appreciative, and he gestured to her that her hair was lovely. Mummyji asked if her mother too had long hair and Nanki said yes and my dad wears a turban. So it runs in the family she said and smiled. Nanki Arora was the only child of her parents- Rachna and Jaideep Arora.

After dinner Mummyji insisted that Nanki should leave her plate on the table which the house help would pick when clearing the table.  Much to everybody’s surprise, Nanki insisted on washing her own plate which her mother had inculcated in her as a habit since her childhood. Sukhi made a mental note of making this a habit for all her 3 children but wondered if they would do so now at this grown up stage – still she will try.

While Nanki was washing her plate she suddenly felt a tug on her hair as if someone was lifting it and a voice said -Hey who are you ? She turned and looked back to the face who had called out . Wait a minute , that  was a familiar face she recollected. Fear and anger gripped her as she recognised the man who was questioning her and rushed out hurriedly.

Nanki, what happened? asked Sakshi. Nothing she said , her eyes pointing in the direction of the man coming out of the kitchen . Oh! that is Tarun Bhaiya , he had a headache , and was sleeping when we came in. Tarun walked into the sitting room and Papaji said Tarun she is Nanki , Sakshi’s friend and has come to stay with us for the weekend. And this is our eldest brother Shri Tarun Ahuja ji, mocked Varun putting his legs up on the sofa. I know him she said in a quiet voice and all attention turned towards her but nobody said anything . Tarun stared at her and walked away to his room.

Varun, said Papaji,  call Tarun and come over to my study for a minute before you retire for the day.  Tarun came in sulking while Varun was humming. Obviously Nanki’s presence in the house was making hearts beat faster. Both, papaji began- Nanki is our guest and we will treat her with utmost respect . With two young men in the house , her mother was not happy to send her over, but Sukhi assured her that she will be safe.

So  Tarun you will not come drunk to the house and neither will you drink in the house at any cost . If you can’t resist then you drink outside and when you come in , keep to your room . Food will be brought to your room. You are not to venture outside intoxicated, while Nanki is here . Tarun muttered under his breath. Varun looked at Tarun and danced his eyebrows making fun of the latter.

Don’t be amused Varun, your rules will make Tarun roar with laughter. I could see you staring at Nanki off and on. I was not , protested Varun. She is a pretty girl and she looked even more beautiful in green with that long hair – said papaji with a smile and his eyes twinkled . Varun looked down sheepishly.  Don’t forget I have gone through your age and believe me it was not easy to keep eyes and hands off my college girls in Hoshiarpur. It may be that she gets attracted to you, as I can see you are a charmer , but I am warning you that you will not touch her in any way . C’mon Papaji this is not Hoshiarpur times and I am 26 . Young people do go out with each other . Yes I get that but not with Nanki as she is Sakshi’s friend . If either of you disobey, I will ask her to address you both as Bhaiya (brother).

Rajinder laughed in his mind thinking that his two sons would get the message loud and clear with this one warning. Now you can both go he said dismissing them. Both the sons left thinking that their freedom was curbed and did Papaji have to say it in such clear words. He had himself enjoyed his youth as he narrated so many times and was now imposing restrictions on his grown up sons?

That night all 4 bedroom lights were on till very late . The Senior Ahuja’s had a late night chai (tea) chat on how children have grown up. Sukhi ! said Rajender, our boys are grown up and we should have thought before getting Nanki. She is a very pretty girl and Varun is all eyes for her. He is just like his father retorted Sukhi with a smile . A total charmer ! But I would love to have Nanki as my daughter in law, but not sure of her feelings. She has been brought up very well even though she is the only child.

No Sukhi let us get Tarun settled first . I am worried about his drinking and womanizing. Just like his father again!, retorted Sukhi. Remember you told me you had 5 affairs before you married me and you confessed kissing 3 of them. And then again , you used to drink so much  that I made my pocket money out of selling your whiskey bottles to the Kabadi (scrap dealer ). And even when you have reduced you are addicted to it everyday. Tarun has an excuse , what is your excuse ? Oh you women live in the past, Rajinder shrugged off . I am an old man now, he said hugging her with a chuckle. I need to feel you are old Rajinder ji and your behaviour doesn’t show me that , she said pushing him away smilingly.

Varun Ahuja was lovesick and was musing with love songs playing one after the other. He was watching Nanki through the rear view mirror while driving back . He had called up his best friend Vinay and told him about Nanki. She is amazing yaar , when she opens her hair she looks  even more prettier.  She is intelligent , shy and I am very sure she liked me too, as I got some good vibes.

Tarun Ahuja was embarrassed and irritated and tossing in bed in his room. That day she looked different and today – well how does it matter. She was not his type but maybe she had her own charm. And Varun will for sure enamour her with his guitar and songs . He wondered if she will tell the family what had happened between them ? . He was quite drunk that day but was sure he had not made a pass at her.

At night in bed, Nanki told Sakshi about her one and only encounter with Tarun although she did not know his name at that time.  She recreated the sequence of events that day for Sakshi. A couple of months back . Nanki had gone for her first party with her cousin Ashish who introduced her there to Tarun, his boss . During the party , Ashish had to rush back home due to an emergency and he had requested Tarun to leave Nanki home . Without Ashish , Nanki was completely out of place and she waited patiently for half an hour. Clearly she did not fit into this culture of dance parties , with dim lights, alcohol and smoking . Uncomfortable she got up to look for the person who was supposed to take her home.

She went around in the house looking for the person who was introduced to her . With the music playing loud , she had not even got his name. The kitchen and the open place was not populated at all. Then she opened one of the rooms and she found a man and woman entwined in bed . Embarrassed she  quickly closed the door and was heading back to the dance room. Hey , wait called out the man who came out of the bedroom, straightening and tucking in his shirt. Oh God! Sakshi recognized him as Ashish’s boss .  He was the person she was looking for. Lady, one would usually knock before opening a bedroom door. Sorry , she looked down and said ,I was looking for you,  to go home.

Now ? the man asked .  The party has just started, let me introduce you to someone who can keep you company, he pulled at her elbow, sharply. You will feel better with company.  Stop it, she pulled her hand back . I will find my way home and she walked towards the entrance door to the house  . The man followed her and put one hand on the door and closed it . Remove your hand or I will slap you, Nanki said angrily. Try it, he said menacingly looking into her eyes. I am not your brother Ashish, remember that ! She swallowed her pride and anger and said please move away a little , you are stinking of alcohol . Please carry on whatever you were doing and I will find a way to reach home.

No wait ! I don’t want that fool of your brother to think I promised, and then did not drop you.  She bit her lip in anger at the mention of her cousin brother as a fool. But how will you drive your car , you are stone drunk, she protested. Very right , he said with a mock smile – I cant drive my car , in this drunken state , but will try my bike . No , No, I am not going on that with you she protested. C’mon you are not my type and I am just doing my duty.  I have lovely Nina with me and I will drop you and come back to her . Sakshi was looking very embarrassed and said – sorry Nanki , I believe whatever you are saying and I am ashamed to hear this – our whole family is worried about Bhaiya . He is hooked on to alcohol and to that Nina, since his engagement broke a year back.

Did he drop you home Nanki asked Sakshi? Yes but it was the most scary drive as he was drunk and he did not have a back rest on his bike,  so the whole time I was trying to balance myself at the back, keeping away from him and the smell of alcohol, while clinging  on to the seat, lest I fall off. He dropped me outside my home and while he was reversing his bike lost his balance and fell down. My mom was watching him and she was very angry that I had come home with a drunkard and Ashish was also on the receiving end from her . Mom had given a piece of mind to your brother too.

Stay here , Sakshi said and went outside the room. She came back in 15 minutes , accompanied by her parents . Sorry Nanki beta , Papaji began , Sakshi told us all about how you had met Tarun and his insensitive and irresponsible behaviour with you. We are really sorry but please be assured this is my house and he will behave and that much I promise you. Varun is very different started Papaji . Tarun is also a nice boy said Mummyji , defending her first born,  but since his engagement  broke off , he had been treating women very badly. He didn’t even tell us what happened between them.

The next day was quieter as Nanki and Sakshi went through their notes and marked what looked likely to be important for exams. Varun had promised them that he would come back from swimming and take them to Nirulas for ice cream after dinner . Sakshi’s room was being pest controlled so the girls were sprawled on the bed in Tarun’s room because the latter had gone to work and was expected late . Suddenly they could hear the  sound of music and Nanki looked back to see Varun standing in the doorway with the guitar.

I finished earlier girls ,and we could have a game of cards or the carom he invited ? Why is there a crowd in my room a stern voice asked? Varun turned around to stare at Tarun and asked, Bhai why are you back now ? It is my house too, Varun so stop questioning me. Nanki hurriedly got up, making a quick bun of her flowing hair and Varun and Sakshi picked up the books , pen and the snacks. She did not look at Tarun but could feel him staring  at her. Bad tempered brat !, she thought.

Sakshi tell mom and dad we will all go out for a movie today. Oh ! Bhaiya, we three were thinking of playing cards or carom. Some other day , he dismissed and closed his door. What cheek,  Nanki thought and a complete autocrat. Which movie- Nanki asked and both Sakshi and Varun shrugged their shoulders.

The whole family was surprised with Tarun’s idea of a movie. For the past one year he had been wedded to Alcohol and work. If there was any time left it was spent with Nina, they assumed. Today almost after a year he wanted to be with family and Sukhi wondered if he was intending to bring in Nina as his wife and was befriending the family in preparation? Papaji had other doubts so he was pensive.

The whole house was ready for the movie but Nanki’s long hair had to be braided . Mummiji asked her to sit at her feet near the sofa and very deftly braided Nanki’s thick long hair, while the whole family watched amused .  Sakshi always had short hair so they had not seen such a scene before. Sorry Nanki apologized – my mother does it at home. If I do it , it takes a longer time and not so neat. Don’t worry beta, Papaji smiled , I am sure Sukhi enjoyed it  .

Nanki wore her blue jeans and a long kurta and her braided hair had some pretty colourful clips on it.  Sakshi too wore her jeans but had a short white top to go with it and she was most excited. Tarun brought out his Maruti Van and it was a little tight for all. Which movie Tarun , asked Mummyji? I wanted ‘Jane bhi do yaron’ , but got tickets only for ‘Chandni’. Varun insisted on sitting at the back and even offered to have his sister on his lap to save space. No! I will sit with my wife and the girls Papaji stated. You sit with your brother . The ride was fun as Varun kept anyone entertained .

In the cinema hall Varun again jumped to sit with Nanki on his side and Papaji intervened .Go and sit on your brothers side. This was getting too much for Varun and he whispered to Tarun as he sat near him- I hope Papaji has not taken a fancy to Nanki, I don’t trust him. Stop drooling over the girl , Tarun said sternly.

During interval all the children were asked to go out and get snacks. What will you have to drink /eat asked Tarun looking at Nanki.? Nothing except some popcorn. We will all have coffee, so do you want to try some. No, she responded. Sakshi and Nanki went to the washroom and when they got back Tarun handed Nanki a huge packet of popcorn and his hands slightly brushed hers in the process. He didn’t seem to notice but she was on her guard.

While all of them were walking back Varun said to her – Nanki you will also look lovely in white , even better than Sridevi. Varun! behave, our sister is listening while you are making such comments. Varun looked sheepish and glared at Tarun. He will settle this separately with big brother , he thought to himself . Sakshi and Nanki both suppressed their giggles and walked ahead. Varun Bhaiya really likes you, Sakshi teased Nanki.

On their way back Tarun stopped at Nirulas near to their house and said – all of you wait here while I get some burgers and pizza’s packed for dinner. I know everybody’s choice so Nanki  you can come along as I don’t know what you would like? I want to have something different too, protested Varun. Not  today , said Tarun and before papaji or anybody could say anything he walked off .

Nanki followed slowly and wondered if he would scream at her for telling his parents about their encounter. He had no such intentions. While waiting for the food to be packed Tarun looked at her and said – sorry , for the other day. I should have behaved. By the way , you have lovely hair. I don’t know any girl who looks so charming as you do with your hair open. He said with no feelings or emotions and Nanki’s heart raced , pounding hard. Before she could say anything he said C’mon lets go back. She quietly got into the car.

After dinner they all retired early . Sakshi and Nanki studied for 2 more hours, but Nanki was in a different world. When Varun complimented her he was so open about it and he expressed it with a lot of emotions . On the other hand why would Tarun say what he said ? She was not his type . The problem was that her reaction to both was different . While she felt nice hearing Varun and his open admiration for her, her heart raced at Tarun’s words and she wanted him to continue and just now . Stop it , she told herself, remember that ugly scene at the party and Nina ?

Nanki please make some tea for us . I am having my periods and I am feeling tired and lazy, requested Sakshi. Well ok, but next will be your turn she said . As she was going to the kitchen she heard raised voices from Tarun’s room.

Papaji’s loud firm voice was chiding Tarun- How will a young innocent girl react to a drunken guy who cannot even balance a motorbike and is falling all over the place . Shame on you , that you get drunk and lose control. Tarun responded – Papaji, toh drinks leke , kya mein company ki auditing shuro kar doon, Peeke aadmi tul hi hota hai, Kaam to nahi kar sakti hai (Father, once you are drunk you are not supposed to start auditing company books, it is normal to lose control). Keep quiet and don’t give any excuses, retorted Papaji.

Sakshi quickly made the tea and as she was going out Varun came into the kitchen. Hi, any tea for me , he asked ? He was a charmer for sure , she thought . You can have half mine and she poured out some. Varun stop lurking around , said Tarun as he came to the kitchen and picked up some snacks. He quickly went away and Nanki rushed to Sakshi’s bedroom leaving Varun there.

On Monday morning Nanki said bye to Papaji, Mummyji and Varun as she and Sakshi left to catch the college special bus. Come again beta Rajinder and Sukhi both said in unison. Tarun was nowhere in sight.

Chapter 2

The days passed by and Sakshi would tell Nanki each day about happenings at home and how much Varun remembered her. Varun would send her cards, flowers and sometimes chocolates through Sakshi . On a Friday just as she reached home from college Nanki’s mother said some Tarun had called for her and when asked for his number,  he said he will call back. A worried look and thought passed over Sakshi’s face. The next time the phone rang Nanki picked and sure enough it was Tarun, Sakshi’s brother.

Nanki  can I meet you once , I owe you an apology . It is ok, you have already said that she emphasised . Just once please ! I want to tell you something about myself. No I am friendly with Varun and I don’t think I can tell him that I met you separately. What ! shouted Tarun, stay away from my brother , he warned . Nanki put the phone down and wondered if she should tell Sakshi. He called twice again but Nanki firmly said – No.

Meanwhile Nanki and Varun continued to have chats on the phone and even had a date at Chanakya . She visited his college in the Law Faculty in Delhi University too. A pleasant bond was developing between them. Sakshi asked her if she liked Varun and Nanki shyly accepted that he was becoming special.

Meanwhile at the Ahuja’s, Tarun was becoming increasingly difficult . He started staying more at home and would keep picking on Varun. At times he would encourage him to go abroad and study more , in fact insisted that he would fund it also. Once he brought Nina home and Papaji was furious and insisted that he could entertain her only in the sitting room. Tarun was also not drinking as usual, which was a very welcome sign but the reason for change remained a mystery. Maybe Nina had asked him to slow down on alcohol?

Tarun had not gone to work three days together and his parents now became worried. He was a workaholic and even when he was unwell he would drag himself to work as if it was his solace. He would watch Varun on the phone and get angry saying that in the last year of his college he was messing around with girls . When Sakshi’s friend from nearby came he shouted at her for idling her time with friends before exams. That night Rajinder Ahuja decided to have a chat with Tarun

A table was laid on the verandah and Papaji brought out his favourite Black label whiskey and asked Sukhwinder to fry some savouries . He called out to Tarun who was in a foul mood. I am watching TV Papaji he protested . When his father insisted , Tarun had a hurried bath and came clad in a white Kurta and churidar. Papaji made two glasses and said – now tell me what is wrong with you? Why are you not going for work? Your mother and I are worried ? I am tired and want some rest he said looking away. Tarun, are you keen on Nina as a wife ? No , she is a friend and I would prefer to keep it at that . You are grown up so look at me and tell me what is troubling you ?

Papaji,  I am tired , Tarun said getting up. Stay there , are you fond of any girl ? I hate women he replied. You have suddenly stopped taking drinks . You are giving Varun and Sakshi a horrible time nagging them . Not going for work. Just sitting around the house and listening to songs . Son, you were better when you were an alcoholic.

I am trying to give up alchohol  said Tarun as he got up, and walked towards the small garden in front of the house . Papaji could not believe his ears and followed him and in a small voice asked – is it  Nanki? There was silence . Tarun is it Nanki? Papaji asked again this time, louder. Why are you asking me ? You know Varun and she are getting close ? That is what I am asking – are you pining for her Tarun ? Tarun stood silently. Papaji continued  you know she detests you , and is probably scared of you too?

Just because I got drunk , he spat out in anger ? She saw you with a woman in bed and I am sure you were not singing songs to the lady and on top of that you were drunk and you drove like a madman . The icing was when you  fell of stupidly from the bike in front of her mother . How do you think any girl would react to that? So,  I said sorry and the stubborn girl wont even talk to me. Papaji she and Varun are going around.

Tarun is it your ego that she is not responding to you, jealousy that Varun has her attention or are you in love with Nanki ? Papaji how does it matter ? Leave it and he walked away leaving his glasss of whisky untouched.

In between Sakshi came to stay at Nanki’s and Varun picked her up and dropped her. Jaideep and Rachna both found him charming and they invited him in, offered tea and insisted he should come again. Nanki’s fondness for him was clearly seen and she fell in love with the thought of being in love.

A month later in preparation for exams Nanki went to stay with Sakshi again ,this time more excited that she would be in close proximity with Varun. Nanki was very happy that Varun never attempted to get physical with her but was looking for a long term relationship. She and Sakshi studied through the day and during breaks ,  Varun entertained the family playing his guitar and playing English  country songs. They went to the Army club for swimming and the weekend was getting more and more enjoyable. Sukhi was secretly enjoying that Varun was spending more and more time with Nanki but Rajinder could sense impending danger.

On Saturday morning after breakfast the girls were studying in their room when they heard a loud argument between Varun and Tarun. Tarun kept accusing him of dating girls and whiling away his time while he was slogging with the family business. Grow up Varun, this Nanki girl is a past time and business is much bigger . If that is the case then why did you call her up asked Varun enquiringly. Stop answering me back or I will break your face. And then Papaji intervened saying – stop this we have a guest in the house. Oh really and your younger son is dating the guest under your nose ? Sakshi got up to close their bedroom door and Nanki beckoned her to refrain.

Varun was in no mood to give up. She is not your Nina, he started all over again. Oh really how will you convince me of that ,said Tarun. Varun go to your room and Tarun you too leave please , shouted Papaji. When they were separated Rajinder told Sukhi, – Tarun is not even drunk yet so difficult to manage him . It is becoming increasingly difficult to take his moods . He is 28 and should be married by now. What is his problem if Varun and Nanki like each other ? Sukhi asked worriedly. She is a very nice girl. Maybe that is the problem, Rajinder said pensively.

Something was wrong but Nanki could not nail it, but one thing was for sure she should not be coming over here now. That evening she and Sakshi were making tea when Papaji came and said – Nanki beta , would you mind if Tarun talks to you for a couple of minutes . He really wants to apologize for that day and for today morning . How could she refuse ? She looked at Varun who was staring at her from the sitting room and said ok ? She had hardly said that when Varun walked out of the house .

Tarun led her to his room and shut the door. Nanki , first I am not drunk. Second can I sit down here next to you? Yes she said and he continued – I am really sorry for that day. I should have behaved better. I haven’t said this  to my family but I don’t know why I feel like telling you. Maybe you will be able to understand me , not that it should make a difference .

I was engaged and had taken my fiancee for a party and was having a drink with my friends. A little while later when I went to look for her ,I found her in an intimate position with another man , a stranger whom she had met for the first time. I could not take it . They were hugging and kissing each other . I dropped her  from my life and since then I have decided not to get married . And frankly after that I don’t think much of women. Nina, she is the girl whom you saw at the party, gives me what I want and I drink after work.

My money and position can buy anything and you refusing to even talk to me hurts my ego. Do you detest me? Nanki was getting uncomfortable with his proximity but this time instead of moving away, she wanted him to come closer. His presence filled the room and overpowered her senses. He was talking so earnestly that it touched a soft spot in her .  She understood the pain he went through and wanted to hug and comfort him . But that was no excuse for using Nina or having casual relationships with another girl. She reminded herself , that she hated this  man but her heart was drawing him closer to her. She suddenly wanted him to hold her close and hug her and never once she had felt the same with Varun even though they had held hands many times. But this guy Tarun was certainly not marriage material and she was not one for casual relationships.

Tarun continued , I know Varun and you like each other and  maybe I am jealous. But I cant admit that to him or my family. With that remark , Nanki came back to her senses. She was dating one brother and craving to be in the arms of another . Utter confusion and how could your heart and head not align on such an important matter?

I am not sure but I think I like it when you are around the house but your anger and disgust frustrates me . I am sure Varun and you will make a good pair but please accept my apology. Sorry I have not planned this very well and I am confused. I was not expecting that you will agree to talk to me . Papaji was right in saying I should apologise .And he said  very clearly that if I touch alcohol, he would not allow me near you.

Now you can go he said , but she didn’t hear that . Nanki stop staring at me like that and leave the room before I forget I am supposed to be decent . She hurriedly got up and went out . Papaji was standing very close to the door and he hugged her saying – you are ok? I hope Tarun did not misbehave. No he didn’t but she wondered if she could tell Papaji that she wanted Tarun to misbehave, a little at least ?

Reprimanding herself she went out and saw Varun walking on the streets. She quickly joined his safe company . He asked,  was Bhaiya okay ? yes she answered and Varun queried more – what did he say? I don’t want to talk just now but he was apologising . Nanki I will fill finish my last year in  two months in May and then I will start working in my Uncles Law firm and also help in family business. Will you marry me – he turned and held her hand . She was caught off guard and and she blurted out a  yes, hoping her riot of emotions would be controlled .  Oh wow!  he jumped , held her hand and rushed back to the house. In the house he loudly said to Papaji , Nanki has agreed to marry me . Tarun came out of his room , looked at her in with no emotions and went to the kitchen.

Sukhi and Rajinder were taken by surprise by the sudden change in scene. Sakshi was thrilled and could not stop hugging her friend. Papaji if you don’t mind I would like to go back today ? Yes, Yes I will drop you myself .  Now we should not be having you in the house as I don’t trust Varun, he joked . I can drop her said Varun but Rajinder said No. I would prefer calling my dad over said Nanki,  suddenly realising that she wanted a break from the Ahuja family.

Jaideep Arora came over in the late evening to pick his daughter . Rajinder offered Jaideep a drink and introduced his two sons. This one I have met he beckoned to Varun- Nice guy! Hello Son , he reached out to Tarun, we haven’t met. As they were moving out Jaideep invited Rajinder home for a drink and get Bhabiji (Rajinder’s wife) and your children too , he said. Yes and I have something to talk to you about separately, said Rajinder but not today.

A day later , Rajinder Papaji called up Jaideep and asked for Nanki’s hand in marriage for Varun as both the children had chosen each other. Rachna chided Sakshi for not letting them know first and springing a surprise. But they were happy with this decision. Varun was educated , had good prospects and was from a good family.

As the days passed Nanki became a recluse. There was no joy in her heart and she herself was responsible for all the confusion in her life. She hardly took any phone calls from Varun and avoided Sakshi too. Varun called several times but she would talked to him once in two days. Her heart was pining away for Tarun and she kept playing his words in her mind – ‘Maybe I am jealous’ ! Did he mean he loved  her or even liked her?  How could she tell either her family or the Ahuja’s that she loved Tarun- if that is what it was. Varun would be shattered. Sakshi wont understand . Papaji and Mummyji would be confused . Her parents would call of anything to do with the family and Tarun- he was probably sleeping with Nina everyday. Disgusting she thought to herself and cried her heart out .

On a Monday morning she called Varun and asked him to meet after her class , but without Sakshi knowing . She herself was evading Sakshi who did not know what was happening. She would refuse to go for any fun things, not even to Nirulas . After class Nanki told Sakshi that she had to go to the doctor and took an autorickshaw and went to Nirulas.

Varun was waiting for her . Let us go to the Nehru park nearby and talk she said . I have a surprise for you he said smiling. Even that did not make her happy. They walked to the nearby park and Varun took out a small jewel box and opened it . My parents bought this for you. We will give it to you formally during our engagement, but I requested them if I could give you a surprise with it today. His happiness was written all over his face.

Nanki walked ahead fast , sat on a stone seat and howled not caring about the public at large. What is wrong Nanki ? Varun was perplexed ? Why are you behaving like this ? Are you scared of getting married ? My family loves you and they will accept you lovingly.  Wait she said putting up her hand !  Nanki we  both wanted this didn’t we and our parents are overjoyed too. Stop Varun please stop !

She should either have the courage to put it across now loud and clear or live in this relationship for this lifetime. Varun, I am sorry I cant marry you. There she had said it . Stunned Varun sat down on the seat next to her . But Nanki what is wrong, what have I done. I haven’t touched you, have treated you with the highest degree of respect and I thought you liked me ? You agreed to marry me . You did not even ask for time to think? What is it ? Your parents don’t like me ?

She cried and cried not knowing what to say. Sorry Varun that is all what I can say. No Nanki, I am not ready to take this he said sternly. You have to tell me -is there anyone you like , have you committed yourself to anyone ? Slowly she looked up and said , all I can say is that I am not committed to anyone else . But if I marry you I will not be doing justice to you or myself .

Do you mind leaving me home she asked . Well do I have a choice ? I can let you down as you are doing to me? He asked her to stay there , while he got the  car. They drove back in silence and Varun said – I have one request please don’t tell this to anyone , give it some time . And I wont have a face to show either to my family or friends. If we are not going to be together , I will do the telling to everyone – is that okay? She opened the car door and said – Varun knowing what I am going through, I can never marry you? I am really sorry and it is all my mistake . You are a fine guy. It is all my doing and she walked away.

Two days later on the dinner table Nanki told her parents, that she had made a mistake. She had decided not to get married to Varun. Please don’t ask me why because I am not comfortable talking about this . Varun is a fine man and he has not said or done anything indecent. The family is lovely but I think I made a hasty decision. I am happy for you to look at other alliances and I would like to get married by the end of this year.

Jaideep protested – but Rajinder and I have fixed everything , even the engagement ceremony. Rachna and I were planning to go out and buy the ring for Varun. Dad, Varun will tell his family. Nobody will blame you or mum . My decision is final. I will not get married to Varun. Rachna put her hand on her forehead and said – I don’t understand anything.

Meanwhile the  Ahuja family was falling apart . Varun stopped going to college, Tarun was off and on from work. Sakshi was confused as her only friend Nanki was always trying to keep her distance . Sukhi worried about her sons and Rajinder was confused . Varun what is wrong with you? Why are you not giving us a date for the wedding , asked Rajinder at the dinner table? Varun kept quiet . Have you had a fight with Nanki ? Tarun was listening attentively and finally when Varun refused to answer he said – has she said something to you? No, but I am sure she heard you when you bad mouthed her here, brother . He said that and walked away. Varun I did apologise to her , Tarun called out behind.

That night Rajendar and Sukhi were awake till late. Something is wrong Sukhi, Rajender said . I thought Varun and Nanki were happy and we have fixed their engagement . But Sakshi says Nanki avoids her . Varun is never on the phone , does not go to class , is moody and insolent like never before . Tarun is a lost case . I am now worried about the business also. Because Saurabh our General Manager said that this month the sales have gone down. Should I talk to Rachna behanji, Sukhi asked ? We can only go to parents not to the child? But I will speak to Jaideep, Rajinder said .

Rajinder called up Jaideep who was himself confused . Rajinder couldn’t believe when Jaideep said that Nanki had said the engagement was off and that Varun will tell his family. She asked us not to intervene and say anything. She even said that we should look for other alliances which we are doing . Rajinder was a little irritated now. But Sir we have given each other our word and you should have atleast told me , what happened .

I am sorry Rajinder , Nanki insisted that Varun will break the news to his family. And she also said that Varun is a very nice person and the problem is with her . She is a grown up girl , how much can we enquire ? She is not even eating and drinking properly. Rajinder thought for a few minutes and said – Jaideep I want to speak to Nanki alone , with your permission and only if she says yes. Jaideep agreed to that on the condition that Nanki agrees .

The next day Jaideep called Rajinder and said ,Nanki has agreed . Please come over , Rachna and I are going out for an occasion and Nanki will be alone with the house help. I would only request you to take care of our daughter as you would do to Sakshi. Be reassured , said Rajinder .

Rajinder reached Nanki’s house alone. Sukhi had insisted to go along but somehow he felt that daughters open up better, to their fathers . He was taken aback by Nanki’s face. She looked pale and sad. Nanki beta , he hugged her and she started crying. What happened? Did Varun hurt you? He led her to the couch but she was clinging to him and sobbing. Papaji please don’t say anything about Varun she cried , he has been really nice . I am the one who said No. He has never done anything wrong. Rajinder was confused and he held her apart from him, shook her and asked – what is the matter ? You are killing me by crying like this . You and Sakshi mean the same to me .

Papaji I can tell no one in this world . Not even my parents or you. Rajinder made her sit straight on the couch and said – Nanki think of me as your older friend Beta. I promise you that I will not even tell Sukhi or your parents. No you will hate me ,she wept unconsolably . Rajinder gathered courage and said – Nanki has somebody else misbehaved with you ? Oh no Papaji! Then what is the matter , he was exasperated but he had promised Jaideep he will handle her sensitively.  Gouri, he called out to the help, please make some tea for us .

He then got up went to the washroom brought out a wet towel, wiped her face and said Nanki, whatever is the matter , I am with you and that is a promise. Had he known what was about to come , he would have asked for some whisky not tea.

Nanki looked at him and said Papaji, if I tell you , promise me you wont hate me and you will tell no one. Of course , that is what I am repeatedly saying. Papaji, Varun is the first man in my life and I liked all the nice things he said to me and I thought it was love . But the day , the day and she stopped. Rajinder held her hand and said – Is it Tarun by any chance ? She broke down and cried again. Did he harm you Nanki? No Papaji, no, no , no! I think I love him.

Rajinder was taken aback. He had suspected this for Tarun but could never believe Nanki would be attracted to him. She was too simple for this guy, or at least he thought so. For a moment a feeling of joy and hope ran through Rajinder but seeing the complexity of the situation he worried . He again took Nanki’s hand and said I am so proud of you Beta. You have done the right thing . You cannot come into the house as Varun’s bride while pining for Tarun. Then he said that with a heavy heart and it will create a rift between the two brothers . Let me see said papaji. You promise me that you will take good care of yourself. Has Tarun ever said he likes you Nanki, though I know those are not his words ? He is a man of action and Varun one of words – not that the latter is bad. No, he has never ever said that and I am sure he wont. He told me months back at the party , that I am not his type . Papaji, smiled and said , Oh I wont worry about that . We men are complex, we dont mind dating any girl, in fact whoever we can find , but we have very different expectations, desires and standards for a wife . He smiled after saying that and said sorry beta – you can say we have double standards.

And are you sure , you want to get married to a third person? Yes Papaji, I cant come into your family after creating this difficult situation. Oh c’mon Nanki don’t blame yourself please . Not your fault . Tarun is a very fine man but bad badly wounded . And because I love you like Sakshi, I am not sure that I would like to get you married to him . However that too is a difficult situation if it happens . He hugged her again, had his tea and said – remember this is a secret between you and me . I will keep coming to see you. Look after yourself and I am sure somewhere in the world there is a fine young man waiting for you. I feel sorry for Tarun, that he could not win you over .

Months passed after Rajinder came home and said to Sakshi, Sukhi and Tarun that nobody should question Varun about Nanki and that is all. Varun did very well in his exams and he cleared a scholarship for International Law in Holland. Rajinder and the whole family was pleased. Varun started recouping and preparing for his departure. Tarun continued to be in a foul mood, irregular at work and so Rajinder would go to oversee business twice a week.

Meanwhile Nanki and Sakshi cleared their exams and went into second year of post graduation. They grew apart but treated each other cordially. Nanki’s parents shortlisted two alliances for her , but she could not get over Tarun. She longed to meet him and kept thinking about the day he apologised and how much she wanted him to say, he loves her . At least if he could say once , she could live a lifetime with that. She can even forget the day she saw him with Nina . Papaji called her now and then to ask for her well being and one day , sent her some flowers with a card – saying I love my daughter- Nanki. Nanki cried seeing the card and wondering what all she had lost, when she dropped Varun.

Then one day Nanki met one of the shortlisted match for her . He was an engineer and was settled in Dubai. She thought it will be a good idea to get out of this country and maybe this would give her some peace . She agreed and even told Papaji the next time he called to ask about her well being. Jaideep and Rachna started preparations for the wedding.

The same week Rajinder announced at the dining table that Nanki was getting married and he watched Tarun’s reactions through the corner of his eyes.  Tarun showed no reaction. Sukhi was angry and said she dumped my Varun and I am not happy about it . Sakshi felt pained as Nanki did not even mention this to her . Rajinder chided Sukhi and said they mutually separated , and I wont hear any nonsense about my Nanki.

That night Rajinder tiptoed and peeped into Tarun’s room and he was stunned . Tarun had hit the bottle again and this was probably after months , well at least in the house. He knocked and said Tarun, I want to talk to you. Even with no response he walked in. He could see Tarun was crying in his heart. Beta , I feel that you like Nanki but I wont be sure until you tell me. Papaji I have lost her forever , he said and cried putting his head down. Rajinder’s old heart danced . He could not handle this without some whiskey. He ran to the kitchen got a glass for himself and said – what did you say – puttar (son)?

Tarun did not look up but said first I lost her to Varun and now to another man. My brother thinks I have broken them off and now she is going away for ever. I was confused about handling the situation if Varun gets married to her . I would have probably gone away. I could not hurt Varun. Honestly Papaji I did not want to break them up. Do you love her Tarun? I don’t know what is love , but all the time I keep thinking about her walking around our house in that green dress with her hair open. Rajinder could not control his excitement and he got up kissed Tarun leaving the latter bewildered and hurriedly walked out to his bedroom. He had a job to do .

He went and blurted all out to Sukhi, about Nanki and Tarun and the broken engagement . Sukhi listened with surprise and did not know what to say. Now what ? She asked . Well I am not going to give up that girl, knowing that she will be good for  our Tarun. But I have to speak to Varun first .

Sukhi dial Varun please ? Varun beta how are you getting along  ? Varun was cheerful and told him about the hostel and new friends . He was glad that he had taken up the course . Rajinder then asked him slowly – beta have you been able to get over Nanki? It is okay Papaji, that was a hasty decision. Sakhsi told me today, a while ago that Nanki is getting married and I am happy for her .

Varun? Nanki is a fine girl beta , she told me what had happened ? Do you want to hear it ? No papaji I have got over her and wish her the best . It is important beta that you should know this . She thought you were a fine man but somewhere in between she was attracted to Tarun and she thought it would be good for everyone, if she does not go ahead with the engagement . She was being very honest Beta and she could not have said this to anyone of us. I had to pull it out of her .

There was silence at the other end . And then Varun said , Papaji if that is the case you should have proposed Bhaiya for her ? No you are equally important and that would have complicated the whole situation. And you know Tarun , we can never read his mind .

However today when I spoke about Sakshi’s impending marriage he hit the bottle again and told me that he never wanted you both to break up and how much he loves you. And does he like her /love her papaji?  Yes I think there is a strong chance and that is the risk we have to take. I wanted your consent and opinion to go ahead with this. Of course you must Papaji , if you want I will speak to Bhaiya, said Varun . She is a fine girl and I think I can manage with her as my Bhabhi (sister in law ).

Rajinder choked with emotion and said – I am so proud of you Beta and today you have shown me that you are big – bigger than all of us. I love you Son! But if this goes ahead we would like to get the wedding done without you beta as that would be best, given the situation. That is if Nanki and Jaideep agree. Papaji , if that makes Bhaiya happy, I will speak to Sakshi myself. Rajinder swelled with pride and emotion and he always thought Varun was the weaker of his son’s. He was actually the strongest.

The next day Rajinder spoke to Nanki over the phone and told her everything. Nanki beta, I will ask Tarun only if you say yes . Nanki was overjoyed at Varun’s reaction and with what Tarun had said to Papaji about her . She cried and said yes Papaji but I don’t know what to tell my parents ? They have fixed my alliance . Leave it to me beta ! said Rajinder .

After a while Rajinder got ready and went to his office . Tarun was sitting at his desk looking at some papers. Papaji, what brings you here today when I am in office ? Rajinder sighed and said – Puttar, I want an answer in yes or no and that is it ? Do you want to get married to Nanki ? And don’t worry about Varun and Nanki’s family and everything else ? Yes or no? Tarun looked up his whole face lighted and said – Yes Papaji if she will have me ?

Rajinder went over and confided to Jaideep and explained that it is important our children are happy. It is okay if we have to go back on our promises to others . After careful deliberation amongst themselves Rachna and Jaideep agreed but more so because Nanki looked happier than ever.

Two weeks later Nanki and Tarun were engaged. On the engagement ceremony , Jaideep picked up a glass of whiskey and said to Rajinder , thank God you don’t have a third son. Rajinder papaji laughed and said I feel young again after a long time .

Tarun looked at Nanki next to him and said , make sure you wear that green kaftan on our wedding night and leave your hair open. I think I fell in love with you when I saw you like that . She smiled and stood closer to him in her finery looking beautiful and glowing. The Ahuja family’s cup of happiness was full once again.
